Why Visit Singapore?

Singapore punches far above its weight as a travel destination. It is one of the world's great food cities — from Michelin-starred hawker stalls to fine-dining restaurants helmed by globally celebrated chefs. Its cultural neighbourhoods (Chinatown, Little India, Kampong Glam, and Tiong Bahru) offer layered histories that reward slow exploration.

The infrastructure is outstanding: the MRT metro is efficient and affordable, English is spoken everywhere, and the city is designed to be visitor-friendly. Add in world-class attractions like Gardens by the Bay, Sentosa Island, the Singapore Zoo, and the Night Safari, and you have a destination that works brilliantly for families, couples, and solo travellers alike.

For luxury seekers, Singapore's hotel scene — from the iconic Raffles to the one-of-a-kind Marina Bay Sands — is among Asia's finest. And as a shopping hub, Orchard Road and the countless malls remain a serious draw.

  • Dine your way from Michelin-starred hawker stalls to rooftop fine-dining restaurants
  • Wander the historic streets of Chinatown, Little India, and Kampong Glam in a single day
  • Marvel at the Supertree Grove and cloud forest domes at Gardens by the Bay
  • Catch the skyline from the iconic infinity pool atop Marina Bay Sands
  • Explore Sentosa Island for beaches, Universal Studios, and waterparks

Travel essentials

Getting around

Singapore's MRT (metro) is the easiest and cheapest way to get around — clean, air-conditioned, and punctual. Buy an EZ-Link card at any MRT station for seamless travel on trains and buses. Grab and Gojek ride-hailing apps work well for door-to-door trips. Taxis are plentiful and metered.

Typical costs

Singapore is not a cheap destination but offers great value at every level. Hawker meals cost SGD 4–8; mid-range restaurant mains SGD 20–40. Budget hotels from SGD 80/night; mid-range SGD 180–350; luxury from SGD 400+. MRT journeys typically SGD 1–3. A comfortable daily budget for a mid-range traveller is around SGD 150–250 (USD 110–185).

Culture and etiquette

Singapore is a multicultural, conservative society — dress modestly when visiting temples and mosques. Queuing is taken seriously; always wait your turn. Tipping is not customary but appreciated. Chewing gum is banned. Jaywalking and littering carry on-the-spot fines. Public displays of affection are generally acceptable but keep it tasteful.

Safety and planning

Singapore is extremely safe with very low crime rates. Tap water is safe to drink. The main health concern is dengue fever — use mosquito repellent, especially during the wet season. Travel insurance is strongly recommended. Emergency number: 999 (police), 995 (ambulance/fire).

Connectivity

Singapore has excellent 4G/5G coverage islandwide. Buy a tourist SIM card at Changi Airport (Singtel, StarHub, or M1) from SGD 15 for 7 days of data. Free Wi-Fi is widely available in malls, hotels, hawker centres, and on the MRT (Wireless@SG network).

Payments

Singapore is largely cashless — contactless cards (Visa/Mastercard) and mobile payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay) are accepted almost everywhere. However, carry some SGD cash for hawker centres and smaller stalls. ATMs are plentiful at all MRT stations and malls.
