The New Spirit of Africa
Ethiopian Airlines is the flag carrier of Ethiopia and one of the fastest-growing and most profitable airlines in Africa. Founded in 1945, the airline has grown from a small domestic operator into a global aviation powerhouse, connecting Africa to the world through its Addis Ababa hub at Bole International Airport.
As a member of the Star Alliance β the first African carrier to join β Ethiopian Airlines operates one of the most modern and fuel-efficient fleets on the continent, anchored by the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A350-900. The airline serves over 125 international destinations across five continents.
Renowned for its award-winning service, Ethiopian Airlines has received numerous accolades including African Airline of the Year multiple times. Its pan-African strategy has seen it establish subsidiaries and equity partnerships across the continent, reinforcing its role as Africa's leading aviation group.
Beyond passenger travel, Ethiopian Cargo & Logistics Services is one of the top cargo carriers in Africa, playing a vital role in the continent's trade and supply chains. Ethiopian Airlines continues to invest in training, infrastructure, and sustainability as it pursues its Vision 2035 growth strategy.
Top destinations served by Ethiopian Airlines
Excess fees β Ethiopian Airlines allows passengers to carry a free checked baggage allowance based on their route and travel class, while any luggage exceeding the permitted weight, size, or number of bags is charged as excess baggage. Economy Class passengers are generally allowed checked bags up to 23kg each, with overweight bags between 23kg and 32kg attracting additional fees, while larger or extra bags are charged per piece depending on destination. Ethiopian Airlines recommends passengers prepay for extra baggage online through its baggage calculator and booking management portal to save time and potentially reduce airport charges.
Prohibited items β Ethiopian Airlines prohibits passengers from carrying dangerous or hazardous items in either checked or cabin baggage to ensure flight safety. Restricted items include explosives, fireworks, flammable liquids, corrosive chemicals, compressed gases, toxic substances, and weapons or sharp objects that may cause injury. Lithium batteries, power banks, and liquids in carry-on baggage are also subject to international aviation restrictions and must comply with size and quantity limits. Valuable items such as cash, jewelry, electronics, travel documents, and medication are recommended for carry-on baggage rather than checked luggage.
