Is October a good month to travel in Africa?

Yes — October is one of the most rewarding months for African travel. Across East Africa, the short rains bring lush scenery and lower crowds. North Africa enjoys perfect temperatures after summer. Southern Africa is in the peak dry season, ideal for wildlife viewing. It's also a shoulder-season month for pricing in many destinations, making it excellent value.

Where is the best African destination for a first safari in October?

Tanzania's Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are outstanding for first-time safari travellers in October. Game viewing is excellent, the landscape is iconic, and the infrastructure for guided safaris is world-class. South Luangwa in Zambia is a brilliant alternative for those who want a more intimate, less-travelled experience.

Does it rain a lot in Zanzibar in October?

October marks the beginning of Zanzibar's short rains (Vuli), but rainfall is typically brief and localized — often an afternoon shower rather than all-day downpours. Most visitors find October very manageable and enjoy the cooler temperatures, quieter resorts, and lower prices that come with the season.

Is gorilla trekking available in October in Rwanda and Uganda?

Yes, gorilla trekking runs year-round in both Rwanda and Uganda. October is considered a shoulder season — treks are available, permits are easier to secure than in peak months, and the forest is lush and green from early rains. Trails can be muddy, so good waterproof boots and layers are essential.

Do African travellers need a visa to visit Morocco in October?

Visa requirements for Morocco vary significantly depending on your passport. Many African nationalities require a visa in advance. We recommend checking the Tsavaro Explore visa tool for your specific corridor before booking, as requirements and processing times can change.

What should I pack for an October trip to Africa?

Packing depends heavily on your destination. For safaris, neutral-coloured lightweight layers (mornings are cool, afternoons warm) plus a light rain jacket work well. For coastal destinations like Zanzibar, pack light linen and a compact umbrella. For city destinations like Cape Town or Marrakech, smart-casual clothing suits most settings. A universal power adapter and reef-safe sunscreen are always useful across the continent.

Can I combine multiple destinations in one October trip?

Absolutely — multi-destination itineraries are one of Tsavaro's specialties. Classic combinations include Tanzania safari + Zanzibar beach, Rwanda gorilla trek + Uganda wildlife, and Cape Town + Winelands + Garden Route. Allow at least 10–14 days for meaningful multi-destination trips to avoid spending more time in airports than in destinations.

How far in advance should I book an October Africa trip?

For gorilla trekking permits (Rwanda and Uganda), we recommend booking 4–6 months in advance as permits are limited. For safari lodges in peak locations like the Serengeti and South Luangwa, 3–5 months ahead is advisable. Beach and city destinations like Zanzibar, Marrakech, and Cape Town can often be arranged with 6–8 weeks' notice in October, though popular properties fill quickly.
