Are morning flights really less likely to be delayed?

Yes, generally. Early-morning flights — especially those departing before 9 a.m. — have the best on-time performance because the aircraft hasn't yet accumulated the ripple-effect delays from earlier rotations. The later in the day you fly, the more likely your flight has been affected by upstream disruptions.

Is it cheaper to fly in the morning or evening?

It depends on the route and season, but very early-morning departures (before 7 a.m.) and overnight red-eyes tend to carry the lowest fares due to reduced traveller demand. Mid-morning slots are usually the most expensive because they're the most convenient. Always compare the full day's schedule when searching for the best price.

What departure time is best for avoiding jet lag?

For eastward travel, an afternoon or morning departure that has you arriving in the late afternoon or evening local time makes it easier to sync with the new time zone. For westward travel, an overnight departure often works well, letting you arrive in the morning ready to start on local time immediately. The goal is to land when it's socially and biologically time to be awake.

Should I book a morning or evening flight for a safari trip in Africa?

Aim to arrive the afternoon before your first activity day so you're rested and ready for an early-morning game drive. A morning or midday flight on the day before safaris start is usually ideal. Avoid red-eyes that land the same morning as your first game drive — you'll be too tired to enjoy it fully.

What time of day has the fewest passengers at African airports?

Very early morning (before 7 a.m.) and late evening (after 9 p.m.) tend to have the thinnest crowds at most African airports. Mid-morning through early afternoon is typically the busiest period, with the highest concentration of check-in queues, security lines, and boarding gate congestion.

Does departure time affect how long security and check-in takes?

Absolutely. Peak travel periods — typically 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. — see the longest queues. If you're flying at a popular mid-morning time, arrive earlier than the standard recommendation. Very early-morning and late-evening travellers often clear security and check-in in a fraction of the time.

What's the best departure time for a flight with a tight connection?

Always take the earliest viable flight when you have a critical connection. This gives you the maximum buffer to recover from any delay before your connecting flight departs. Evening departures with tight connections are high-risk — a small delay can cascade into a missed connection and a full day's disruption.

Can I save money by choosing an unpopular departure time?

Yes — very early morning and late-night departures are often significantly cheaper than mid-morning or early-afternoon options because demand is lower. On competitive African domestic routes, the fare difference between a 6 a.m. departure and a 10 a.m. departure can be 20–40%. If you're flexible and budget-conscious, searching across the full day's schedule pays off.
