The Pride of Africa
Kenya Airways is Kenya's national carrier and one of Africa's leading airlines, proudly bearing the nickname "The Pride of Africa." Founded in 1977 after the dissolution of East African Airways, the airline has grown from a small regional operator into a major international carrier connecting Africa to the world.
Headquartered at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya Airways operates an extensive network spanning Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. As a member of the SkyTeam global alliance, passengers benefit from seamless connections to a worldwide network of partner airlines.
The airline is majority owned by the Kenyan government and has been at the forefront of aviation development on the African continent, championing Project Safari β an ambitious restructuring plan aimed at restoring profitability and expanding its route network. Kenya Airways operates a modern fleet including the fuel-efficient Boeing 787 Dreamliner, enabling long-haul routes with enhanced passenger comfort.

Excess fees β Kenya Airways allows passengers to travel with a free checked baggage allowance based on route and ticket class, while any luggage exceeding the permitted weight, size, or number of bags attracts excess baggage charges that vary by destination. Economy passengers on most African and international routes typically receive at least one 23kg checked bag, while Business Class passengers receive higher allowances. Extra baggage fees are charged through to the final destination, and passengers are encouraged to prepay online where available to reduce airport costs. Kenya Airways also permits baggage pooling for families or groups traveling together on the same itinerary, although weight limits still apply per individual bag.
Prohibited items β Kenya Airways prohibits passengers from carrying dangerous or restricted items in either checked or hand baggage for safety reasons. These include explosives, fireworks, flammable liquids, compressed gases, poisons, radioactive or corrosive materials, pepper sprays, and other hazardous substances. Sharp objects, firearms, and offensive weapons are not allowed in the cabin and may only be accepted as checked baggage under strict authorization and documentation requirements.
